Hello everyone in the Lord Jesus.
This study looks at the role that God's law (10 commandments) has in leading us to Gods' saving grace through faith *Ephesians 2:8-9. As already shown from the scriptures, in a previous study on "What is the knowledge of good and evil? ", God's 10 Commandments give us the knowledge of good (moral right doing) and evil (moral wrong doing); sin (moral wrong doing) and righteousness (moral right doing) *see Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4; Psalms 119:172. The first four commandments *Exodus 20:3-11 show us how we are to love God with all of our heart and the second six commandments *Exodus 20:11-17 our neighbor as ourselves. This is why Jesus says in Matthew 22:36-40 on these two great commandments hang all the law and the prophets and in Romans 13:8-10 Paul shows that we love our fellow man by obeying the last six commandments.
The main question of this study is how does God's law lead us to God's grace? Let's start off by first defining what Gods' grace is then look at what is the purpose of God's grace
Ephesians 2:8-9 [8], For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9], Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Note: We are saved by God's grace through faith and it is a free gift of God!
Q. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF GRACE?
Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries w/TVM, Strong - G5485 χάρις (cháris | khar'-ece)
Derivation: from G5463; Strong's: graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude) KJV: —acceptable, benefit*,* favour, gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy).
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament, Thayer - G5485 — χάρις χάριτος, accusative χάριν, and twice in L T Tr WH the rarer form χάριτα (Acts 24:27; Jude 1:4) which is also poetic (cf. Alexander Buttmann (1873) Ausf. Spr. i. § 44 Anm. 1; (WHs Appendix, 157{b}; Buttmann, 13 (12))), accusative plural χάριτας (24:27 R G), ἡ (χαίρω), from Homer down, Hebrew חֵן, grace; i. e. Good-will, loving-kindness, favor: in a broad sense, χάρις παρά τίνι, Luke 2:52; ἔχειν χάριν πρός τινα, to have favor with one, Acts 2:47; χάρις ἐναντίον τινας, 7:10; (χάριν κατά τίνος αἴτεσθαι ὅπως (which see II. 2), 25:3 (but others refer this to 3 b. below)); χάρις (of God) ἐστιν ἐπί τινα, attends and assists one, Luke 2:40; Acts 4:33; χάριν (χάριτα) χάριτας κατατίθεσθαι τίνι (see κατατίθημι), 24:27; 25:9; favor (i. e. act of favoring (cf. Winer's Grammar, § 66 at the end)), 2Co 8:4. χάρις is used of the kindness of a master toward his inferiors or servants, and so especially of God toward men: εὑρίσκειν χάριν παρά τῷ Θεῷ, Luke 1:30; ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ, Acts 7:46; τοῦτο χάρις ἐστιν, this wins for us (God's) favor (R. V. is acceptable), 1Pet 2:19; with παρά Θεῷ added, 2:20; παραδεδομένοι τῇ χάριτι τοῦ Θεοῦ, to be committed or commended to the protecting and helping favor of God, Acts 14:26; 15:40. The apostles and N. T. writers at the beginning and end of their Epistles crave for their readers the favor (`grace') of God or of Christ, to which all blessings, especially spiritual, are due: Rom 1:7; 16:20, 16:24 (R G); 1Co 1:3; 16:23; 2Co 1:2; 13:13 (14); Gal 1:3; 6:18; Eph 1:2; 6:24; Phil 1:2; 4:23; Col 1:2; 4:18; 1Thes 1:1; 5:28; 2Thes 1:2; 3:18; 1Tim 1:2; 6:21 (22); 2Tim 1:2; 4:22: Titus 1:4; 3:15; Phil 1:3, 1:25; Heb 13:25; 1Pet 1:2; 2Pet 1:2; 3:18 (cf. 3 a.); 2John 1:3; Rev 1:4; 22:21; cf. Otto, Ueber d. apostol. Segensgruss χάρις ὑμῖν etc., in the Jahrbb. f. deutsche Theol. for 1867, p. 678ff. Moreover, the word χάρις contains the idea of kindness which bestows upon one what he has not deserved: Rom 11:6; hence, κατά χάριν and κατά ὀφείλημα are contrasted in 4:4, 4:16; χάριτι and ἐξ ἔργων in 11:6; κατ' ἀκλογην χάριτος, 11:5; but the N. T. writers use χάρις pre-eminently of that kindness by which God bestow: favors even upon the ill-deserving, and grants to sinners the pardon of their offences, and bids them accept of eternal salvation through Christ: 3:24; 5:17, 5:20f; (1Co 15:10; Gal 1:15; 2:21; Eph 1:6,(2:5,7>f; Phil 1:7; Col 1:6; 2Thes 2:16; 1Tim 1:14; 2Tim 1:9; Heb 2:9 (here Treg. marginal reading χωρίς); 10:29; 12:15; 13:9; 1Pet 1:10; Jude 1:4; εὑρίσκειν χάριν, Heb 4:16; ἡ χάρις τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡ σωτήριος, Titus 2:11; ὁ λόγος τῆς χάριτος, the message of his grace, Acts 14:3; 20:32; τό εὐαγγέλιον τῆς χάριτος τοῦ Θεοῦ, 20:24; it is styled 'the grace of Christ,' in that through pity for sinful men Christ left his state of blessedness with God in heaven, and voluntarily underwent the hardships and miseries of human life, and by his sufferings and death procured salvation for mankind: (15:11); 2Co 8:9; Rom 5:15; Gal 1:6; (Titus 3:7); John 1:14, 1:17. χάρις is used of "the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues": 2Co 4:15; 6:1; 2Thes 1:12; οἱ πεπιστευκότες διά τῆς χάριτος, Acts 18:27; ὑπό χάριν εἶναι,' to be subject to the power of grace, opposed to ὑπό νόμον εἶναι, Rom 6:14f; τῆς χάριτος ἐξεπέσατε, Gal 5:4; προσμένειν τῇ χαρη, Acts 13:43 (G L T Tr WH); ἐπιμένειν, ibid. Rec.; ἐν τῇ χάριτι (R G WH text omit the article), prompted by grace, Col 3:16; the grace of God promoting the progress and blessings of the Christian religion, Acts 11:23; (prompting its possessors to benefactions, 2Co 9:14); sustaining and aiding the efforts of the men who labor for the cause of Christ, 1Co 15:10; 2Co 1:12; the favor of Christ, assisting and strengthening his followers and ministers to bear their troubles, 12:9. ..........................

A. HOW DOES GOD'S LAW LEAD US TO GOD'S GRACE?
Gods' 10 Commandments are the standard that gives us the knowledge of good (moral right doing) when obeyed and the knowledge of evil (moral wrong doing) when disobeyed. Gods' 10 commandments give us the knowledge of sin (moral wrong doing) when disobeyed and righteousness (moral right doing) when obeyed *Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4; Psalms 119:172. God's law shows us that we are all sinners and have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and that the wages of our sins is death *Romans 6:23 but God was not willing that anyone of us should perish and sent His only begotten son so that whosoever simply believes on Him, that is on His death that paid the penalty for our sins, and believes and follows His Word should never perish but have everlasting life *John 3:16-36. Jesus therefore is our gift of God's grace to everyone who believes (John 3:36) and Gods' 10 commandments lead us to Christ that we might be forgiven through faith to receive God's free gift of grace *Ephesians 2:8-9.
May God bless you as you seek Him through His Word.
